Curriculum Leader: Mrs Jessica Christmas
At Reynolds Academy, our aim is to deliver a history curriculum that inspires children's' curiosity to know more about the past whilst being able to develop the skills they need to think and act as historians. They will study a range of topics, that will allow them opportunities to investigate and interpret the past, understand chronology, build an overview of Britain's past as well as that of the wider world, and be able to communicate historically. We also aim to allow children to develop a high-level historical vocabulary.
We aim to encourage a love of history starting in Early Years and progressing to when children embark on their secondary education and beyond. We want to bring history to life, through a range of teaching techniques and enrichment activities such as the use of artefacts and whole school theme days. Where relevant, specific visits or visitors will be considered to further knowledge and skills, and again, to excite and enthuse.
When children leave our school, we want to have young historians who have an excellent knowledge and understanding of people, events and contexts from a range of historical periods, including significant events in Britain’s past and the local area. We also hope that children will be able to think critically about history and be able to effectively communicate to a variety of audiences. They should have the ability to support, evaluate and challenge their own and others' views using historical evidence from a range of sources. As children move through the school, we hope to see them develop a respect for historical evidence and the ability to think, reflect, debate, discuss and evaluate the past using this evidence.
Our medium-term plans will allow staff to develop knowledge and skills using a thematic approach. We will use the milestones created by Chris Quigley Education alongside these plans to ensure children are given the opportunity to build their knowledge and skills from Early Years through to Key Stage 1 and 2. Curriculum leaders will ensure that progress is tracked through appropriate monitoring across the history curriculum. Teachers will also look to make connections with other curriculum areas such as geography and science.
