Intent:
At Reynolds Academy we believe that art stimulates creativity and ignites imagination. It provides visual and sensory experiences and a unique way of understanding and responding to the changing world around us. A high-quality art and design education should inspire, enthuse and challenge children - enabling pupils to communicate what they observe, feel, think and create through drawing, painting and sculpting with a range of materials. As our pupil's progress through art, they will gain a more thorough understanding of the history of great artists and designers; whilst knowing how art and design both reflect and shape the culture, creativity and prosperity of our nation.
Our Art and Design curriculum encourages responsibility and individuality by inspiring children to take charge of their own learning through independent decision making, manipulating materials and demonstrating high standards of presentation. Finally, resilience through self-evaluation of work is encouraged, children are taught to improve their work and reach their goals to the best of their abilities. We ensure that art and design lessons across Reynolds Academy cultivate the children with a range of skills to prepare them for the wider world.
Implementation:
At Reynolds Academy, Art is taught explicitly in Years 1-6 which allows the children to learn and engage their knowledge and skills in depth. We use Milestones created by Chris Quigley Education, in conjunction with our planning to ensure the children develop a secure understanding of the subject. In particular, developing ideas mastering practical techniques and taking inspirations from the greats. In Early Years children are encouraged to express themselves through opportunities provided within the provision. Skills are embedded as they move from Early Years through to Key Stage 1 and 2. We have developed a progression of skills with each year group, which enables pupils to build on and develop their knowledge and skills each year.
Impact:
When pupils have reached the end of their primary journey, we want them to have acquired, improved and embedded a range of artistic skills. They should have an awareness of a broad range of artists and designers, and be able to consider and discuss the artworks they discover. We want our pupils to be confident to explore and take risks, placing value on the journey that they take, not just on the finished product. Most importantly, we want pupils to have found and enjoyed a creative passion – a means of self-expression and enjoyment.
