First Place for Nursery in Scarecrow Festival Competition
During the 2022 Summer Term, Reynolds Academy Nursery decided to take part in the Grimsby Garden Centre 'Grow With Us' Scarecrow Festival.
As part of their 'Grow With Us' project, the garden centre invited primary schools from across North East Lincolnshire to get creative and enter their competition with their best scarecrow! The successful school would receive a great activity pack to use in the garden.
Grimsby Garden Centre are part of NAViGO and are a training provider and employer for local people with mental health issues. They are a huge part of the local community and encourage everyone, whatever their age, to get out into the garden.
Reynolds Academy Nursery pupils focused on the theme of the beach and as a class, everyone voted for their favourite idea. The chosen favourite was of course, SpongeBob SquarePants.
The essentials to create a great scarecrow were delivered to each of the primary schools and all of the children worked hard to create individual sections of the scarecrow and staff and teachers helped with the tricky parts to assemble him together.
Once the scarecrows were assembled, they were delivered to Grimsby Garden Centre, where they were displayed for the public to see and vote for their favourite. You were able to vote in person or via social media, and we received some great feedback on our entry!
The team of staff and students who helped build the scarecrow visited the garden centre in the Autumn term to take part in some arts and crafts and to find out the results of the competition. During the visit, we created two bird feeders and ate some lovely cake at The Potting Shed Cafe.
When it came to the time for results, we were shocked to find out that we had won 1st place!
The prize for winning the competition was an oak tree, some compost and various seeds and planting equipment which we will be able to use in our school gardens!
