Reynolds Councillors explore Cleethorpes’ history
Reynolds Academy’s school councillors had an exciting and educational time at Cleethorpes Town Hall last Friday, participating in a special Heritage Open Day.
The event, with a unique theme of things starting with the letter ‘B’, offered the children an opportunity to explore the town’s rich history through a variety of fascinating exhibits.
From old-fashioned bathing costumes to church bells, and even historical bridges that have stood the test of time, the students were captivated by the diverse collection on display.
One story stood out and truly inspired the group: the tale of Brenda Fisher, a local hero who broke the women’s world record for swimming the English Channel in 1951. The children were in awe of Brenda's courage and determination, and her story sparked plenty of discussion among the group.
One student said: “It was really interesting to hear about the history and I really enjoyed exploring the exhibition.”
A special highlight of the visit was a guided tour of the Town Hall’s council chambers. The children had the chance to admire important portraits and artefacts that tell the story of Cleethorpes and the building’s role in the local community.
The experience became even more memorable when they met the current Mayor, Cllr Janet Goodwin, who shared her insights on what it’s like to be both a councillor and the mayor. This moment resonated deeply with the children, allowing them to connect their own roles as school councillors with the responsibilities of local government.
No day out would be complete without a bit of fun, and the children certainly got that when they enjoyed a hilarious Punch and Judy show. The timeless puppet performance had everyone laughing, bringing a light-hearted end to an enriching day.
Teacher Mrs Hall said: “A big thank you goes to all those who helped make the trip possible. The children had an unforgettable experience, learning not only about the history of Cleethorpes but also about the importance of local leadership and community.”
The school councillors left Cleethorpes Town Hall excited for future adventures that will continue to spark their curiosity and expand their knowledge.
It was truly a day of learning, inspiration, and laughter and is certainly one that will surely stay with the children for years to come.
